Spanish Missions in California and Manila: Restoration and Preservation in Modern Cities

Laya, an avid art collector, will discuss the building of missions and their significance in modern society, using examples from his own involvement in the restoration of an 18th-century church in Manila. Laya will address the architecture of the church, its similarities to Spanish missions in California, and the challenges of preserving cultural heritage in modern cities. The talk will be followed by a conversation among Laya, IR/PS Dean Peter Cowhey, and Derrick Cartwright, executive director of the San Diego Museum of Art.

Lecture by Alejandra Rincón, Ph.D., the author of a forthcoming book entitled “Undocumented Immigrants and Higher Education: Sí se puede!”. Dr. Rincón will discuss the historic struggle of undocumented students and their supporters to gain equal access to higher education through in-state tuition laws. These efforts, which have been successful in ten states thus far, are the current expression of past civil rights struggles and may have broader implications for the population as a whole.
